Just as some countries on our planet are expanding light resources, which increases with Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and our use of light is said to be at least stable or unchanged*, a new report as stated in an article by NPR, “Earth Is Lit, And That’s A Problem” suggests that our efforts through expanded purchases of LED lights may have a “Rebound Effect” as we buy LED lights to reduce energy consumption and save money, we use more of it. This in turn effects the planet, animals and nocturnal pollutants like bees. *There are also underrepresented reports of light pollution being detected. Please see the full report in Science Advances in the article, “Artificially Lit Surface of Earth at Night Increasing In Radiance and Effect.” What can we do to share the wealth, conserve energy, contribute to equitable light use, and help on a small scale? We can turn them off -as often as possible-; we can consider alternatives, and the International Dark Sky Association offers more suggestions here.
